註釋Paul Hindemith is one of the dominant musical figures of the 20th century. A vastly prolific composer, his works ranging from little pieces for children up to operas of imposing proportions, he was also a practicing musician, both as violist and as orchestral conductor, an influential teacher in both Europe and America, and a writer whose books, whether educational or literary, are among the most revealing written on the subject of music. It is possible, perhaps, to be all these things without being of much interest as a human being -- possible, but not very likely. The purpose of this book is to portray the human being, and in setting that as my aim I am conscious that I am defying the wish of Paul Hindemith himself. He was more than reticent about his private life: he was downright secretive. What has become evident to me through a study of all sources is the extent to which Hindemith's being was dominated and regulated by music. He lived and breathed music as naturally and involuntarily as all of us breathe air. - Introduction.
