The Privilege of Flight
註釋This autobiography recounts the extraordinary life of Iris Cummings Critchell. While still in her teens, she became a world-class athlete, earning several national swimming championships and a spot on the US 1936 Olympic Team. After learning to fly while in college in 1939, Iris has spent a lifetime teaching aeronautics and flight. After teaching in the Civil Pilot Training Program, during WW II she ferried military aircraft for the Air Transport Command. After the War, she returned to teaching aeronautics and flight for the USC College of Aeronautics at Santa Maria. For 16 years Iris helped conduct and was a top scorer in the All-Woman Transcontinental Air Races (AWTAR). A meeting, and subsequent close friendship, with Isabel Bates, another woman also inspired by the opportunity to fly, led Isabel Bates to establish the Bates Foundation, which for 36 years supported Iris as a member of the faculty, teaching, both in the classroom and in the air, special aeronautics and flight courses to students at Harvey Mudd College. Iris's autobiography chronicles her deep respect for "The Privilege of Flight" and her dedication to aeronautics education, which continue to inspire her family, friends, students, and members of the Harvey Mudd College and aviation communities. --
