This novel, the first part of Banffy's Transylvanian Trilogy, provides a wide-ranging portrait of his homeland in the early twentieth century as seen through the eves of two young aristocratic Transylvanian cousins. Against a backdrop of grand shooting parties, turbulent scenes in parliament, and the luxury of life where good manners cloak indifference and brutality, is set the plight of exploited Romanian peasants.
