Zach at Risk
註釋This insightful and craftily written novel gives readers a riveting view of life in a nontraditional family. Zach, 13, lives in Seattle with his mom, her lesbian partner, and their gay neighbor, Josia--not exactly Ozzie and Harriet. Zach's folks don't like his new best friend, Raul, a young runaway who hustles men on the street for a living. On top of that, Zach's after-school job is turning into a nightmare of shame and molestation. Zach at Risk takes readers along on the rickety carnival ride that is 13-year-old Zach's life and will add a new dimension to the way they think of "family." From the novel: Zach reached behind the socks and underwear in the top drawer, feeling through the different fabrics until his fingers touched the cold blue metal of his mother's hidden gun. He pulled the .38 from the drawer, noticing as he did so that the trigger lock his mother kept on it had been left with the key still in place. That was like his mother somehow--the supposed protection of a trigger guard, made pointless by the key inside it. Zach turned the key.... He imagined his mother--or someone--finding him. They would know how impossible it had gotten for him then, they would realize how much he was hurting. Zach adjusted his grip and stared at himself in the oval mirror. He looked different to himself and older, his eyes huge and sad above the hammer of the gun.
