Vpliv palatoplastike na rast zgornjega dela ustne votline pri desetletnih otrocih z izolirano palatoshizo
註釋BACKGROUND. Cleft palate is operatively closed with palatoplasty. It is considered that the scaring which forms after the operation, negatively affects the growth of the maxilla. The surgeons are seeking the optimal methodand age for the operation in order to cause minimum scarring and damage to the growth centers. In the Clinical department for maxillofacial surgery inLjubljana, the standard operative method is used for the closure of isolatedcleft palate. The surgical procedure is performed between 2 and 3 years of age. So far the effect of the operation on the growth of maxilla has not been assessed within the institution. AIM. We checked whether the dimensions of the maxilla of the children at 10 years of age, who had been operated, deviate from the dimensions of the children of the same age without the cleft. In case such deviations exist, we wanted to find out whether they were the same as those established at birth. HYPOTESIS. We assumed that the surgical treatment in use does not cause retardation of the maxillary growth. METHODS. Plaster casts of the upper jaw from 25 children with cleft palate, which have been operated at two and a half years, were included in the retrospective study. Plaster casts of the upper jaw from 23 children without clefts at ten years of age served as the control group. The models were analyzed using the trigonometric method, which provides insight into the sagittal, transversal and craniocaudal dimension of the observed area. We compared the results with the findings of a research, which was carried out onnewborns with and without cleft. The same method had been used in the compared research.
