The Grapevine Creek Battle
註釋Fighting between the two groups commonly consisted of raids by small bodies of warriors for the purpose of attaining status, either through the acquisition of horses or the gaining of other types of coups. Economic factors linked to the fur trade accelerated and intensified this conflict. However, the traditional pattern of raiding continued to be dominant. The aim of the conflict was not for one of the tribes to impose permanent cultural or political hegemony over another, but rather as means of establishing and maintaining leadership positions within a band and as a way of expanding that band's hunting area or supplementing its wealth. Territorial acquisition or defense does not seem to have played a major role in relations between Blackfeet and Crows.
