Effects on the Stratosphere of SST Operation
註釋Some consequences of SST engine emissions in the lower stratosphere are considered. Projected emission quantities of H2O, CO, CO2, NOx, SO2, soot, and unburned hydrocarbons are compared with naturally occurring quantities of these substances. There is some present evidence that emissions from the SST will not produce measurable changes in the stratosphere. However, the very restricted knowledge of some stratospheric and operational parameters demands full exploration of the lower stratosphere before commercial use of the SST aircraft is achieved. The Concorde and TU-144 supersonic transport prototypes are presently being test-flown, and the United States SST is in design stages. Unfortunately, important questions regarding the impact of SST operation on the stratosphere have not been fully answered.
