註釋If the Civil War does not loom large as a subject for presidential addresses, it thrusts up repeatedly in considerations of other subject. It also functions, in H. C. Nixon's phrase, as the "great calendarial dam across the stream of Southern history." Once again in the early 1960s as in the early 1940's, the tensions and spirit of the times have thrust up into the presidential addresses, but in a framework of self-analysis rather than sectionalism. Taken as a group, these essays touch upon points in a wide spectrum of their field. It would be too much to ask, perhaps, that they collectively represent any fundamental trends in southern history; too much certainly to demand that they cover the whole scope of southern history. -- Introduction.
