Gathered over several centuries, partly on an official basis and partly as the result of the personal taste of monarchs, the pictures are wide ranging and significant. Unlike those of a major art gallery, the paintings of the Royal Collection are distributed amongst several royal residences and this has perhaps tended to lessen the impact of any single artist or school.
