註釋British paintings are one of the Royal Collection's greatest strengths. Gathered over several centuries, partly on an official basis and partly as the result of the personal taste of monarchs, the pictures are wide ranging and significant. Unlike those of a major art gallery, the paintings of the Royal Collection are distributed amongst several royal residences and this has perhaps tended to lessen the impact of any single artist or school.
