Henry Timrod Papers
註釋Letter book, 1851-1898, of Henry Timrod, preserving typescript copies of correspondence; volume, 1854, Henry Timrod, "Sea and Shore," compiled by Martha LeBaron Goddard; broadside poem, 1861 [likely printed in Charleston], entitled "Ode to the Meeting of the Southern Congress," Timrod celebrates secession and the birth of the Confederate government, opening with the line "Hath not the morning dawned with added light?" Timrod continues to exult "At last we are a nation among nations." He then explores the rectitude of the southern cause before musing on the bright future that awaited the Confederate states. [Copy held by the Library was included among the personal effects of a Private David E. Pendleton, a member of Company A of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, who was captured at Reams Station, on 25 August 1864 and later exchanged as part of prisoner release on 15 February, 1865.]
