DESCRIPTION (Number)

Normally Number means digit that may be one or more than one. In another word we call them as numerical also which relates to any number. It also relates to counting of something in figure.

When we ask from somebody, “How many students are there in your school?” We must reply in number – say 50.

In some application form we must fill up our date of birth in words as well as in figures.

For example:

1 Date of Birth (Write in words) – Tenth April One Thousand Nine Hundred Forty-Six

2 Date of Birth (Write in figures) – 10. 04. 1946

In mathematics, statistics, Geometry, Trigonometry, in Science and Technology number indicates a digit or a figure.

But in Grammar Number means something else. It is quite different from that we know and use in our day to day work.

In Grammar Number relates to a single word or more than that which we write or speak in course of description or explanation or conversation or speech.

It is either “Singular Number or Plural Number”. Singular indicates only one noun (Mostly Proper Nouns) whereas Plural indicates more than one noun (mostly Proper Nouns).

For instance:

A book: It means only one book.

A boy: It means only one boy.

An elephant: It means only one elephant.

Two books: It means more than one book.

Three boys: It means more than one boy.

Four elephants: It means more than one elephant.
