"Il nostro pittore fiamengo"
註釋This catalogue, dedicated to Giovanni Caracca, is the result of a new phase of research and studies which began in 2002 with the acquisition by the Museo Civico d'Arte Antica di Torino, of the Presentazione al Tempio (Presentation at the Temple) from the Church of San Domenico in Turin. The painting, lost at the beginning of the 1900s, reappeared in a Florentine antiques market in 1985. After the purchase, the Museum undertook lengthy and delicate conservation which was concluded in 2005 with the hanging of the panel in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin. The research carried out for the exhibition led to further in-depth knowledge of Caracca as portrait painter and his interesting interpretations of the dynastic image of dukes and Sabauda princes. He was internationally recognised as a portrait artist by his contemporaries and was well established not only at the Turin court but also at the Spanish court of Philip II. The Galleria Sabauda is now also able to document this genre of his pictorial activity thanks to two new acquisitions in addition to the panels of the Flemish painter already in the collection. The canvases depicting Margherita of Savoia, 6 years old and Emanuele Filiberto of Savoia, 2 years old, which were originally painted for the Sabauda court collection, are now deposited at the Galleria Sabauda thanks to the acquisitions made by two Turin bank foundations: the Cassa di Risparmio di Torino and la Compagnia San Paolo.
