Thirty Million Texans?
註釋THIRTY MILLION TEXANS? by demographer Leon Bouvier & sociologist Dudley Poston, provides an analysis of Texas's rapid population growth, fueled by rising immigration & fertility levels. It explores the impact of continued population growth on the competitiveness of the state's future labor force & the economy as a whole. It also examines the implications this growth has for the quality & cost of education, health care, infrastructure & the environment. Texas's population was 17 million in 1990. Bouvier & Poston project, under their "medium scenario," that it will surpass 30 million by 2030 AND STILL BE GROWING RAPIDLY. How will Texas manage to provide quality education, housing, health care, jobs, & a decent quality of life for an additional 13 million people in the next 40 years, when it already has difficulty providing adequately for its current population? The authors find that, if Texas is to compete successfully in the 21st Century, population growth must be slowed & eventually stopped. And as THIRTY MILLION TEXANS? makes abundantly clear, the only way to do this is to reduce both fertility & immigration; reducing one or the other won't solve the problem.
