The relationship between a teacher and his disinterested student, Shel Kinmont, provides the basis for this novel. Their friendship manages to survive and develop in unlikely circumstances, at the same time provoking acts of cruelty and betrayal and eventually tragedy. The author has won numerous prizes for poetry and fiction and his third novel, 'To the Burning City', won the 1992 National Book Council Banjo Award for Fiction.
