This assessment builds upon the results presented in the 1997 Canadian Acid Rain Assessment and presents the latest research related to the following: 1) progress towards reducing acid-causing emissions; 2) response of the atmosphere to past, present, and future changes in emissions; 3) new critical load estimates for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; 4) effects on forests, soils, aquatic ecosystems, wildlife, and human health; 5) recovery of aquatic ecosystems; 6) linkages to other environmental issues; 7) gaps in our understanding of the issue; and 8) on-going efforts to quantify the costs and benefits associated with reducing acid deposition.
