With his ‘apparition’ persona, Pearson is working a profitable vein here. There is a sense in which we all feel insubstantial, almost invisible - and not just at a lunch counter when everyone but you is being served. Pearson has caught well our sense of ephemerality and how soon we are doomed to exist only in the memories of those who knew us - and, even there, not for long.
