註釋
Discusses the published works of Leo Baeck, emphasizing his attitude to Christianity. Pp. 21-69 briefly chronicle his life, including his presidency of the Reichsvertretung (later the Reichsvereinigung) of the Jews in Nazi Germany, and his activities as rabbi and teacher in Theresienstadt. Examines accusations that the Reichsvereinigung collaborated with the Nazis and that in Theresienstadt Baeck wrongfully withheld from Jews the knowledge that transport to Auschwitz meant death. Argues that in both these matters Baeck was blameless. The postscript by Bertold Klappert, "Brücken zwischen Judentum und Christentum" (pp. 285-328), deals with Baeck's attempt, through his writings of the 1930s, to lend strength to his people under Nazi persecution, and with the silence of the Confessing Church, some of whose spokesmen saw in these persecutions the judgment of God.
