However, the disintegration of the Taliban made the conceptual distinction between unconventional and conventional a serious matter. This is because the luxury of facing a conventional enemy disappeared when the Taliban fell. Consequently, the relevance of conventional warfare also declined as the nature of the war changed. After being confronted with a drastically altered operational setting, the orientation of the U.S. military did not change. In fact, as the war became increasingly unconventional, the U.S. response became more conventional.
