Since the second edition of this standard reference on the chemical and medical properties of antibiotic compounds was published in 1979, the number of new antibiotics which have been discovered has increased enormously, particularly those derived from new and mutant strains of known organisms. In order to keep the present edition to a reasonable size, a number of changes have been made to the previous format.
