The overlay design analysis in the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures introduces nondestructive deflections testing as a primary means of evaluating the in situ structural capacity of existing pavements. In order to use the approaches recommended in the AASHTO Guide, deflection measurements or backcalculated layer properties must be corrected to a particular type of loading system and a standard set of environmental conditions. One of the major environmental factors affecting surface deflection measurements of flexible pavements is the pavement temperature.
