註釋Traces the history of the Jews in the district of Schaumburg in Lower Saxony from their settlement there in the 13th century. They were tolerated only sporadically, under the protection of the emperor. As a result of the Black Death epidemic in 1346, Jews were persecuted and the Jewish communities were annihilated. In the 16th century, 35 Jews settled in the area, making a living as merchants, moneylenders, and cattle dealers. After another plague epidemic in 1625, the elite of the Jewish community left for the northern towns of Bremen and Hamburg, leaving behind the poorer Jewish population. Pp. 86-170 deal with the Nazi period, focusing on the Nazi anti-Jewish legislation, the boycott of Jewish enterprises, the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, emigration, forced labor, and deportation. 138 of the Jews living in Schaumburg were deported to Riga, Theresienstadt, and Warsaw. Pp. 178-191 include interviews with Holocaust survivors from Schaumburg.
