註釋Pp. 8-60 contain an introduction by the editor describing the life of Martha Glass. Glass (1878-1959, née Martha Stern in Monchen-Gladbach) lived with her husband and two daughters in Hamburg from 1903. By 1937, 30% of German Jews had emigrated; Glass and her husband did not apply for emigration in time, and their application was refused by the authorities. On 19 July 1942 they were deported to Theresienstadt, where Glass kept a diary for three years, describing her daily experiences and expressing her hopes and fears. In January 1943 her husband died of starvation and illness. Her daughters survived, one living in Germany and the other in the USA. In 1947 Glass emigrated to the USA.
