Raised in the 1940s and 1950s in a tiny Vermont village on the Quebec border, the author experienced what a growing middle class life was life. His father had risen in a small bank to become its president while his mother was the typical housewife of that era, staying home with the idealized family of two children: a boy and a girl. They were in many ways a family that could easily have been depicted by Norman Rockwell on the covers of the popular Saturday Evening Post. However, they were not really quite that type of family, the boy keeping, as best he could, his secret: his lusts for other boys and young men. The memoir consists of several short pieces that span six decades, arriving at where the author is today, retired and married to a man with whom he has lived for a quarter of a century.
