Abstract: "Two different approaches, 'Simulated Annealing' and 'Spring System', are applied to the problem of drawing 'nice' NIAM Conceptual Schema Diagrams. The algorithms presented deal with general graphs (NIAM Diagrams) with straight-line edges. The simulated annealing approach employs four simple criteria for the aesthetic quality of the result. The spring system is simpler because its aesthetic quality is built into the system itself."
