註釋Pp. 49-54 and 59-60 deal with the attitude of Ulysses S. Grant to the Jews. At the time of the Civil War, public opinion on both sides of the front contended that Jews were trading through the lines, i.e. with the enemy. On 17 December 1862, General Grant ordered the expulsion of the Jews from the southern military zone. The order evoked protests and complaints to Lincoln, and was revoked. When he became president in 1869, Grant felt guilty about his attitude to the Jews and appointed several Jews to public office. Pp. 393-403 deal with the Holocaust period, the reaction of the congregation to it, and the fate of some members who became victims of the Holocaust, such as Rebecca Gotthelf (who was born in Washington and died in Theresienstadt), or who managed to leave the Reich in the last moment and settled in Washington.
