Hitherto letters have been thought of as built-up pen-made forms of more or less fixed design. Nicolete Gray examines alternative conceptions: letters as surfaces defined by flexible outline, as forms which can be assimilated to geometrical ideas, as illusionist three-dimensional entities, as units in a pattern worked out against a positive background.
