註釋An account by Ács (née Haas, b. 1924), related to Levendel, on Jewish life in the town of Szécsény (northern Hungary) before the war and how it changed with the advent of the Holocaust. Deals with the implementation of the anti-Jewish laws and how they affected daily life. In 1941 there were 280 Jews in the town. Describes ghettoization, torture and humiliation of local Jews by the gendarmes. At the age of 16, Ács moved to Budapest and found work as a photographic apprentice (she later became a well-known professional photographer). After the German occupation she lived in hiding, and for a brief period in a ghetto in Budapest. Her parents did not survive. Includes many photos, facsimiles of newspaper items, letters relating individual stories of survival, and a list of Szécsény victims.
