註釋"The use of metal conductors to protect buildings from lightning damage began with Benjamin Franklin's experiment in 1752, since which time the scientific world generally has advocated the protection of houses, barns and other property from lightning. Experience has proved conclusively that when the equipment is carefully and intelligently selected and installed the protection afforded is almost complete. A number of insurance companies very properly make lower rates for protected buildings, and some companies will not insure an unprotected building. To protect buildings from lightning, concise, practical, and up-to-date information on the subject is needed; and, to obtain the greatest degree of protection with the type of installation chosen, there should be definite specifications for installing the equipment. This bulletin contains such information. The tree sets of specifications given herein for rods and fittings of different materials will enable the prospective buyer of protection to make an intelligent choice of the one best suited to his needs."--Page ii.
