註釋
Letters of William Shenstone was first published in 1939. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions.William Shenstone (1714-63), English poet, best known for his Pastoral Ballad and The School-Mistress, has appealed to many generations of persons of diverse tastes - as poet, as landscape gardener, as representative country gentleman of the eighteenth century, as pensée-writer and prose stylist, as literary precursor of the Romantic Movement, and finally as a well-connected man of his times, whose writings, and especially whose letters, throw a great many illuminating sidelights upon the work and lives of his greater contemporaries.Within the last ten years Shenstone has been the subject of no less than three biographical and critical studies and numerous articles. In 1927 Havelock Ellis edited a selection of his essays. In recognition of the steady interest in Shenstone, here is a documented collection of his letters which will be treasured as a source of information by students of the eighteenth century whatever their special interest. There are 284 letters in this volume, more than one-third of them never before published. Mr. Mallam has edited the collection with thoroughness, scholarly accuracy, and good taste. He has established the chronology of many undated letters. It was only in these private letters the Shenstone wholly shook off his inhibitions and dared to speak his mind freely.
