註釋"'No country's composers', says the author, 'have so sedulously cultivated the piano as those of France.' In this book he surveys the whole panorama of French piano music, terminating with music written and published as late as 1936. In addition to discussing those composers whose names are now household words, Norman Demuth draws attention to many who, although duly recognised in France, do not often appear in piano programmes in this country. Among these we may single out Pierre de Bréville, Déodat de Séverac, Gustave Samazeuilh, André Jolivet, Henri Dutilleux, Abel Decaux, Jean-Jacques Grunenwald, Henry Barraud, and Pierre Boulez. Olivier Messiaen is given sympathetic and understanding consideration. His remarks on interpretation will be found to be stimulating and challenging and will, it is hoped, save many players from falling into traps laid by custom. The publishers are confident that the volume will supply a long-felt need since nothing of this nature and little on this subject has previously appeared in this country." --Dust jacket flap.
