To oust Goethe, Baroness Heygendorf brings a canine melodrama to the Weimar stage, knowing that Goethe-unlike the dog lover Carl August-could not tolerate this. This critical edition is prefaced by an introductory essay, which tracks the play's performance history and analyzes aesthetic debates surrounding animal performance. It also includes 18 images that bring nineteenth-century German theater and culture to life.
