This book features 30 different styles of holiday house where all kinds of experiences are possible away from life in the city. They're found on remote escarpments of the South African hinterland, in the vineyard-filled valleys and among the mountains of the Overberg and the Boland, in barren Karoo veld, by the sea on the Garden Route, the West Coast and the Cape Peninsula, overlooking the lagoon at Churchhaven and on the edges of small country towns in the Sandveld and Swartland. Some are there because there's great fishing nearby or the beaches are safe for swimming. Some are in landscapes of cultural significance while others are in locations where natural wonders are endemic. Some have ostriches for neighbours. Others have African penguins or herds of Nguni cattle. All have something in common however; in spite of their physical differences, no matter their age or style or who they belong to, the idea of going to and occupying a house - your own or somebody else's - for a sojourn away from home, flirts with an atavistic desire to make a home, to settle, whatever the context.
