Abstract: The balance between food supply and population is a major concern. The gravity of the global situation is increasingly apparent. The future ability of man to feed growing populations is regarded as a problem needing interdependent national and global solution. 21 speeches by world authorities at major FAO occasions during a 20-year period show a change in emphasis, from an attitude of adapting food production to population requirements to realization of an urgent need for simultaneous action on both fronts.
