General description of the collection: The Adelbert Ames papers include general officer's correspondence including 52 letters written by or to members of Ames Family including his fiancee / wife between 1860 and 1899. Letters describe experiences in Cuba, Montauk Point, Camp Meade, and selection of military bases in South Carolina; relationships among high command; 1893 diary of voyage to Cuba; map of Havana; and references to son Butler Ames, in 6th Massachusetts Infantry. The 1860 to 1870 letters are in published form and the 1899 letters are originals.
