Mass Spectrometer Studies of Ionization Processes in Nitrogen
註釋The phenomenon of spontaneous ionization in nitrogen is discussed and the auroral afterglow is attributed to this process. The ions which are extracted from the nitrogen plasma afterglow were analyzed with an electric quadrupole mass spectrometer. The mass spectrometer measurements were supplemented by r. f. absorption studies. It is concluded that the precursor event in the afterglow is the production of free electrons and ions. The observed afterglow light is a result of rapid ion-neutral and ion-electron collisions.
