In this report, we give a general review of the possible areas, in which the methods of applied mathematics may be implemented to the benefit of modern material sciences. In particular, we address the emerging framework of nanotechnologies, and discuss both the issue of modeling, as well as that of solving (typically by approximate/numerical methods) the mathematical problem as presented by the model. We also emphasize the crucial role of close collaboration between the mathematicians on one side, and scientists and engineers on the other side, for the overall success.
