註釋
Reprinted editorial by Lewis Tappan originally appearing in the British banner. It is written in response to an ongoing controversy over the character of Reverend J.W. Chickering in relation to his position on slavery, in which Tappan argues that Chickering is pro-slavery. Following the editorial is a letter to the editor of the Portland enquirer by Austin Wiley in response to re-publication of articles from the British banner on the Chickering controversy. Additional documents on the same subject compiled by Willey follow.
