Fourth-grader Brit has a habit of spying on her neighbor, an elderly woman the kids call Mad Mary. It takes her mind off all her worries about her family. On one of her spying missions, Brit comes nose-to-nose with what looks like a bear. It turns out to be a big, lovable dog named Mischief, and she's determined to adopt him. And while trying to make the dog her own, Brit discovers that Mad Mary isn't really crazy after all, and that in spite of their problems, her family will get by.
