註釋Preceding his literary career, Conrad spent twenty years at sea, acquiring from this experience a command of English and the nautical rhetoric which authenticates his early masterpieces. Conrad's seafaring years birthed his literary career. Yet, in many ways, the mariner and novelist existed separately. By the time Conrad published his first novel in 1895, he had retired from the sea, never to return. Engaging with three of Conrad's works, 'Youth, ' Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim along with pertinent texts, autobiographical accounts, and literary correspondence, I will explore how Conrad's transition from sea to land influenced his writing from 1895-1913.
