註釋Memoir of Dr. William G. McCarthyThe guiding lights of my life are a commitment to family and education. I was born in MillValley, California in 1926. My parents immigrated from Ireland, and I grew up in the beauty ofnature and the challenges of life in rural Northern California. I was an altar boy in the localchurch and worked in the fields picking fruit and hops. I played baseball as a youngster andthen for UC Berkeley. I met my wife Susan there, and we married in 1950. We had sixchildren-Mary Catherine, Isabel, Billy, Danny, Joe, and Susy. I received my master's and thenmy doctorate in education from Stanford University. I then taught in the UC Berkeley teachereducation program until we moved to Indiana State, where I became the Chairman of theDepartment of Elementary Education. Susan and I have had a wonderful life with our childrenand grandchildren. I educated many young teachers; several of my children are also teachers.Enjoy this story of my life! Susan writes, "The Struggle and Liberation." As I look back, on my life, I am astounded at how one, simple, everyday belief of mine had considerable effect. "In my inner life, I felt insecure and consequently, I behaved at times in an immature manner. If you examine my childhood and the many times I moved and had to be accepted by new peers, perhaps that may explain some of my insecurity. Since then, a transformation brings me satisfaction. So, here's my life story: the adventures of youth from the perspective of adulthood, a terrible tragedy, the one spiritual ecstasy I experienced, some failures and final triumphs, and the worries and outcomes. This is my river, the tributaries so astonishing, the terrible waterfall, the clear streams and rocky creeks-beautiful to behold.
