註釋The purpose of this remarkable book is to analyze questions that many Americans find themselves asking each day as the sad events of the day are reported in the news: What has gone wrong with the family of this country? Why is the problem of violent crime so bad, particularly among the young, among ethnic minorities, and in large cities? This book crystallizes these questions in relation to the severe problems of the contemporary urban African -American family which "despite amelioration of legal and economic conditions, is in far worse shape today than it as at the beginning of the century" - not that the problems of the black family are any different from the problems of the population as a whole.
