The Sculpture of William Tucker
註釋William Tucker (born 1935) is a British-born abstract sculptor and writer on art who settled in the USA in 1976. This is the first major monograph on his work and includes a complete catalogue of his sculpture to date.In 1965 Tucker was among the artists included in the New Generation exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, which marked the emergence of a new British sculptural avant-garde inspired by Anthony Caro. In common with his contemporaries Phillip King, Timothy Scott and David Annesley, Tucker responded to Caro's emphasis on abstraction while parting company with him in terms of approach. Experimenting with metal and other media, the New Generation sculptors attempted to banish mannerisms and intricacies of assembly and form, while achieving a strangeness which is arresting and distinguishes sculpture from other manufactured objects.Tucker is also a writer, and his book The Language of Sculpture, published in 1974, attempted to relieve sculpture from the legacy of the post-war period, advocating 'autonomy of structure' and an emphasis on form.Joy Sleeman's text provides an overview of the sculptor's oeuvre and career and focuses on key works which mark important departures or achievements in his work. The book establishes Tucker's importance for the history, theory and practice of sculpture and will be essential reading for artists, art historians, curators and dealers.
