Twenty-seven concepts for mobile wave attenuators and piers in 6 categories are reviewed toward exploring their capability to form a single mobile unit--termed a multi-purpose harbor unit-which could be used with others like it to form either a breakwater or a pier. The most promising types for use as a multi-purpose harbor unit are: a caisson of spaced pontoons (Amirikian type - costing about $15,000 per weatherside foot); a floating inclined platform of pontoons (Patrick type - costing about $40,000 per weatherside foot) and a legged platform or legged pontoon with proper attenuator such as a fixed baffle (DeLong type - costing about $20,000 per weatherside foot). The last type is considered the most promising and it is recommended that a study of its feasibility as a multi-purpose harbor unit be made. (Author).
