A new type of automatic electrode controller for submerged-arc furnaces has been developed by the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM), in response to the need for some means of overcoming the problems that are experienced on large submerged-arc furnaces. This paper deals with the development of the algorithm for the prototype unit. The exact nature of the problem with conventional electrode control is explained, and the operation of the prototype unit is described.
