註釋The smaller private college, in particular, is an amalgam of many disparate forces from its past, as well as of the exigencies of the present and of its plans and hopes for the future. Financial resources, the quality of its students (as opposed to their quantity), and the intangible "spirit" stemming from its traditions are, of course, salient features of Washington and Lee's development. Since, however, the college's academic programs constitute the primary topic of this paper, I have treated these other matters only peripherally.--foreword.
