註釋Affirms that an important fact which facilitated the perscecution of Jews and Conversos in Spain in the 14th-15th centuries, as well as their expulsion in 1492, was the weakness of the Spanish kings, characteristic of the incipient stage of the modern Spanish state, in facing the growing antisemitism of the populace and the Church. The concessions of the Crown to them, as expressed in increasingly discriminatory anti-Jewish legislation, and the passivity of the kings concerning anti-Jewish attacks resulted in exacerbation of the anti-Jewish and anti-Converso hostility of the populace and in instigations of the Church, leading the Crown to establish the Inquisition and finally to decree the expulsion of the Jews. The appendix on pp. 401-524 contains documents.
