Journeys to Java by a Siamese King
註釋Enthroned at a very young age, King Chulalongkorn who had extraordinary vision, wished to study European statemanship in preparing himself to rule and reform his country effectively when he came of age of 20. Java, with a stop-over in Singapore on the way, was chosen by the young king as the first destination to visit. At that time, both of these places were well advanced and prospered with trade and new technologies. Besides, it was to see how Westerners governed their colonies. At that time Java had long been colonized by the Dutch and Singapore was under British rule. The trips were undoubtedly fruitful. In the late years of his long reign, the King was able to strengthen diplomatic ties, modernize his country and, most importantly, keep his land free from Western colonialism.
