We have devoted the second book of our series to the subject of supplements in dermatology, a topic, which has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years, and which the diverse range of articles presented here duly reflects. The authors explain the role of supplements in skin diseases and anti- aging applications. Some of the questions you will find answers to in this book include: do anti-aging diets have a role to play in the aging process? Is collagen really useful, or has it achieved mythological status unjustifiably in recent years? Do topical and oral vitamins confer any benefits in skin diseases, and with respect to hair and nail health? Can both topical and oral probiotics serve as an alternative to standard treatments, especially in chronic skin diseases, despite their increasing use in recent years? Are vitamins A, B, C, D and biotin really useful in the treatment of skin, hair and nail diseases, or have they just become fashionable clinical adjuncts of late? Is N-acetyl cysteine really a panacea?
In this book, therefore, you will have an opportunity to read about the role of supplements in skin diseases, a subject, which has been covered to a greater or lesser degree in the literature, but has not, as such, received consistent attention to date. As a result, we have tried to show whether supplements indeed merit a place in the treatment spectrum when subject to closer scientific scrutiny. In the course of your reading, you may find some of the results surprising, and look to draw on them in due course in your daily routine. We hope this second book will prove to be a useful work.
