註釋Memoirs of a Polish Jewish literary critic and writer, from the interwar period up to 1968. Concentrates on his difficult assimilation to Polish culture. Describes his childhood in Sambor (now Sambir, Ukraine), studies in Lvov University in the 1930s in the period of growing antisemitism, and the wartime in Sambor. Includes memoirs of his sister, Irena Sandauer-Glanz, and testimony of his mother, Berta Sandauer, on the family's wartime experiences, the pogrom in Sambor, massacres organized by Germans and Ukrainians, the ghetto in Sambor, and resistance there. Sandauer's family survived the war with the help of Ukrainians.
