註釋
This study aims to learn more about the experiences of families who had been subject to investigation by statutory authorities in respect of their ability to care for their children. In particular, it focuses on parents whose children had been taken into the care of the child welfare department in Western Australia. As background, a review of the literature was conducted (included as an appendix) as well as an analysis of documentation associated with support meetings held over the previous eighteen months. Both these reviews highlighted the common themes of grief, loss, despair, and powerlessness among parents and families whose children had been taken into care. The major component of the study was interviews and focus groups with 41 parents and grandparent carers. The findings reveal how these families face ongoing stress, unresolved anger, guilt, shame and despair, with their experiences of statutory intervention being a series of events in which they felt demeaned and marginalised.
